“Art is the desire of a man to express himself, to record the reactions of his personality to the world he lives” -Amy Lowell. Art has always been a way of expressing yourself and your feelings. From a young age, we are taught to express our feelings and opinions. And with art it’s a simple, fun, beautiful way of showing it. Art can come in many different shapes and forms: a painting, sculpture, drawing, dance, singing etc. Whatever it may be, it has an impact on us as an audience. It may encourage us to do better, be better, be more loving, caring etc. We can never doubt the power of an art piece, for example, Ai Wei Wei’s mural of backpacks to represent all the lost children of the terrible earthquake that hit China. That mural touched everyone’s heart and made us feel something. Works of art can make us feel so many different emotions and make us think, but with one swift movement artists can change the entire feeling and presence of the piece and to me that is amazing.
Art has so many things to show and teach us, for instance history. If we go farther back in time and watch the evolution of art in the United States, what we see would be astonishing. Now, how about a timeline of Chinese art, or art from Japan, Germany, Ireland? I couldn’t imagine seeing all the works since the start from each and every culture or nationality there are. People don’t realize that art itself is a way of learning history. And without the artwork that was formed during a specific time period that time period wouldn’t be the same. It has a greater impact on us than we realize and it’s a shame because I want people to see all that the world and talented artists can offer.
What would happen if we took away all the art? It would be a bare, dull and empty world, with walls of white. We wouldn’t be able to realize the beauty all around us. We wouldn’t see how beautiful a sunset is and appreciate it. I think art has a way of showing us that everything that we see or hear is art and it is beautiful. Because, like I said before, without art and the artists, the world would be a dull, bare, boring place.
I don’t think art or any art forms get enough attention in society. Now it’s all about technology and what the latest fashion trends and social media apps are available. But if we open the people’s eyes and show them that there is something beautiful that isn’t on the computer, phone or TV screen that could really change the world.
